We have been so blessed to have dear friends visit us this month!

In Kruger Park with the Judsons, we saw big animals

 And small animals

 Did 8 ziplines down a mountain near Hazyview

Saw for ourselves the "hazy" and the "view" at Blyde River Canyon 

Chowed on pancakes at Harrie's in Graskop

Hiked around Bourke's Luck Potholes

Toured a cultural village (alas, no footage of Michele Swazi-dancing)

Interacted with elephants

And had a fun dinner at Moyo after a long drive back to Johannesburg!

Then Jessica arrived and we went to the temple

Helped Kate's class learn how to make balloon dogs

 

 Enjoyed boerevors prepared especially by Kate and Jeff

 

 Toured John's school

Visited Bryanston Market

 Toured Soweto, Nelson Mandela's Home, and Apartheid Museum

And had the time of our lives at Notten's Bush Camp in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve

Another highlight was Jessica sharing her balloon magic with about 100 third graders at Diepsloot Combined School where I help teach English.  Check out the link below under the two entries titled "Balloon Fun!" ...It was SO FUN!

Durban, South Africa!

So for the Father's Day long weekend, Jeff wanted to go to Durban where it's WARM!

"Durbs" is on the Indian Ocean and wow, is it beautiful!!

Jeff and the kids even saw dolphins playing!  We stayed at a fun B&B called The Boathouse which was right on the beach.

Michele and Kate were treated to a pedicure!

We had dinner on a retired ship that used to deliver mosquito netting along the Mozambiquan Coast.  Jeff  had traditional Mozambiquan beef prepared with a friend egg on top.

And Jeff and John were both able to handle the HOT peri peri sauce.

Sunday, we went to church in the uMlazi Township W Ward (http://www.umlazi.co.za)

with our friends Nomthi and Ephraim (neighbors in Fourways Gardens, Joburg).

We visited the home where Ephraim grew up (4 rooms/20 people)

Then we had dinner with them at their apartment overlooking the Durban Harbor.

Monday, we went to Ushaka Marine World and enjoyed a day at the aquarium.  That evening, we hurried to King Shaka Airport just to find out our flight was delayed about 1.5 hours back to Joburg.  

So the kids were tired the next day at school, but we all agreed it was totally worth it!

"Rabbit: It's What's For Dinner" (Don't Tell Kate)

Hello from South Africa!  This post ended up having more links than a Boerewors convention, so block off 20 minutes and keep reading!

Winter is arriving!  We are wearing sheep skin slippers and sweaters inside the house these days!  It is made of cement, has no insulation, tile floors and no central heat; so what else would you expect?  Notice the trees in this photo--many have lost their leaves but there are still lots of beautiful evergreens!

Many birds of paradise greet you as you approach our front door!

Kate joined the other kids at church to make blankets for the homeless.

We've discovered our estate's clubhouse and playground is a great place to meet up with friends on Friday afternoons.  Moms can sit in the sun sipping cold drinks (or something a little harder), kids can make their own pizzas, run through grassy fields, play tennis, climb rocks, splash in the creek, and hang from trees.  Kate got pretty scraped up when she fell out of a tree one day.  When she was at the fitness center a few days later, she accidentally knocked the scab off as she got out of the pool.  The owie began to bleed profusely.  Caryn went to look for a bandaid (a "plaster") which the front desk was unable to provide.  In the meantime, a well-meaning employee saw blood dripping down Kate's leg and hit the emergency alarm.  Immediately an army of about 13 first responders descended on Kate.  About this time, Caryn returned and showed them that the owie was actually quite small and queried if "this is what is required to get a plaster around here?!?!"  Here's the famed plaster...

John is practicing his isiZulu (which he's studying at school) with our good friend and neighbor Nomthi.  He also helped her prepare some traditional foods for a braii (barbecue) she hosted recently.

We all discovered we quite like chakalaka, pap, and boerewors (beef, pork, lamb and spice sausage)!

This is Kate's friend Talia from school.  Here they are pretending to be bunnies at the Fourways Gardens clubhouse playground.

Kate loves to play with the rabbits in the pen at her physio therapist's rooms (ie. offices)

Kate and Michele went with our friends the Sixishes to an Alice in Wonderland event at Chartwell Castle (where we met Alice's friends in the largest hedgerow maze in the southern hemisphere).

The Queen of Hearts (who was hilarious) told Kate she was almost as beautiful as she is. 

And Kate was immediately smitten with--you guessed it--The White Rabbit!

Speaking of bunnies, John took this photo at the butchery. 

We decided not to purchase.

I believe I mentioned the Wm Nicol road construction we must BRAVE every time we go to John's school in a previous post?  Ha!Ya!  See 14 April post!

GE hosted a family day at the Joburg Zoo.  

John especially enjoyed driving a Ferrari (so zoo-centric).

Because there are SIX boys plus Kate in her 2nd grade class, Kate was able to land the role of "THE QUEEN" for their recent school assembly skit.

I love Kate's school, North Sands Academy!  During the closing prayer of the assembly, Kate's principal prayed for South Africa's dear leader, 94-year old Nelson Mandela.  She prayed that the transition may be peaceful (and it seemed that could be taken 2 ways:  as Madiba transitions to the next life and as this country transitions to life without him).  He is universally loved here.

At a church activity, we created crate gardens which are growing at the church, with the auxiliaries competing for the best garden  (John's garden for the Young Men is currently in the lead).  The produce will be given to a local orphanage.

Families also made boxes to take home.  Here is ours!  We harvested our first batch of yummy spinach...

...which we shared with our friends, President and Sister Omer, who came to dinner.  Jeff grilled his famous steaks and John baked a delicious almond cake.  Lekker!!
